Electrical and Natural Gas Safety

Follow these tips and help make your business safe and comfortable.

Low Cost Tips

Install efficient lighting
There are many low cost solutions a business can invest in to increase the efficiency of lighting and reduce costs in the long term. For example, replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents, which can last about ten times longer. Incandescent lights in exit signs can be replaced with LED fixtures.

Install programmable thermostats
Programmable thermostats exist to control temperature settings automatically and save energy.

Regular maintenance of HVAC system
Ensure your heating and air conditioning systems are maintained regularly for efficient operation.

Downsizing your monitors
Larger computer monitors use more energy than their small counterparts. For example, switching from a 17 inch monitor to a 14 inch monitor can reduce energy costs by 35%.

No Cost Tips

Reduce your lighting
Turn off lights in unoccupied areas. Evaluate your business premises for excess lighting and reduce where possible.

Turn up your thermostat
You can save 3% for each degree the thermostat is set at over 72 degrees! During warm months set your thermostat to 78 degrees during working hours and turn off or up to 85 degrees when the workplace is closed or unoccupied.

Use office equipment efficiently
Set copiers, monitors, and computers to switch to sleep mode when not in use. Remember to turn all equipment off at the end of the workday.

Investment Tips

Weatherize Buildings
Apply a heat-blocking coating to your roof, and install awnings, solar-shade screens, or sun-control film for windows to conserve energy.

Retrofit lighting
Install occupancy sensors in your business to reduce lighting costs by up to 40%. Convert T12 lights and magnetic ballast to T8 lights and electronic ballast. Convert TV surveillance cameras to modern equipment, which may not require flood lighting.
